Under my skin

Artwork explanation

In the Earth Pulse Series, my view to the human geography, which has always been from space to the surface of the earth, is floating between the sky, the surface of the earth and its centre.

From the high altitude, the earth and human life, with all its concerns in the nature and modernity, are seen in the theme of abstraction and its composition with urban texture, which according to the requirements of my mental world, is formed based on the internal and external changes, from the personal concerns to the greatest global crises.

The embryonic forms in my works symbolize the life, pulse, and the hope for the future, which are hidden in the depths and are protected to become the seeds of a healthier and happier world.

Expert Opinion

In this context, Bita Vakili’s paintings, based on Lottmann’s theory, will be analysed in relation to the semiosphere and then, her style of painting will be reviewed.

According to Lottmann’s theory, and with consideration of space as a metalingual feature, the typology of culture, which means the separation of “familiar culture” and “another culture”, is being introduced. Based on this cultural model, “familiar culture” has features such as systematicity, continuity, legitimacy, in contrast, “another culture” is considered disordered, unorganised, monstrous and savage. Though, the “familiar culture” in order to consolidate its identity, will be forced to accept “another culture” and establish an interactive relation in stages in a contradictory way.

Following the given introduction, I will encounter Bita Vakili’s works of art and while analysing, I will explain the Lottmann’s theory in relation to her works.

The crystallisation and birth are presented as a foetus in the central core. This embryo is a representative of the “familiar culture”. On the fringe, in opposition to the birth and nature, the industrial world and skyscrapers, shaped with staples, have been risen up monstrously, to represent “another culture”. Basically, Lottmann considers the structure of the semiosphere as an asymmetric structure, and this asymmetry has clearly manifests itself in the relation between the centre of the birth, as “familiar culture” and the fringe, as “another culture”.

The unorganized urban and industrial spaces, while shaping the fringes, have formed one of the principles of Vakili’s work. This fringe area dominates the core and the genesis from the heart of nature. The dark colours on the fringe also, in contrast to the colours of nature and her delicate brushstrokes, is placed in the centre, which has led the centre into the miniature like and the eastern style paintings. On the contrary, a contradiction and, of course, the interaction with an uncontrollable society is portrayed.

A storyline can be drawn out from this series of works based on the semiosphere structure. A fringe that pushes the centre back at the beginning of the narrative and presents itself dominant on the whole, gradually fades. This fading occurs when the colours in the centre begin to shine. The space of the centre is expanded. The embryo has grown larger; it will be the centre that pushes back the marginal space in the semiosphere system. Once the centre has gained power, the colour spectrum also glows to emerge the aesthetic climax of her paintings in a figure, which has formed from the core and the centre and is pushing the marginal space back.
