Farmanfarmaeian was born in the city of Qazvin in 1922. He was eight years old when he came to Tehran with her father, who was a parliamentary representative. Her father's entertainment was "designing a carpet" and running a carpet workshop. From childhood to Monir from painting flowers she was interested in, then studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Tehran from 1944 to 1946. During those years, an American art historian and archaeologist drew her attention to the lines and forms of glamorous, simple and elegant ancient objects. This friendship continued, and later, Warhol donated one of his painting of the Marilyn Monroe series to Monir. Monir Farmanfarmaeian married to Law Student Abulbashir Farmanfarmaeian, after separating from Manuchehr Yektai, a contemporary painter and poet, and named her surname as her artistic name. After a 13-year absence, he returned to Iran in 1957. Some of painting showcased in Venice Biennale, 1958. An abstract painting from her showcased in the first biennial of Tehran in 1958 brought her a gold medal. In the two decades after marriage, he traveled to different parts of Iran and became acquainted with traditional Iranian culture and art.

In the late 40's, which combines an old technique of painting behind the glass, mirroring, cladding, Islamic geometry and architectural design. Prior to Monir, no one had presented this work as an independent art work. Monir Farmanfarmaeian is the only artist who has been using mirroring, geometric shapes, patterns, and glass painting for the past 40 years to create his own modern works. His distinctive style, formed in the late 1940s and early 1950s, has come from strong and deep links with her country and an apprenticeship in New York. In 2015, Farmanfarmaeian became the first Iranian artist to appear at a group exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum of New York.
