Akbar Nikanpour

Akbar Nikanpour

Akbar Nikanpour was born in Ardabil in 1956. He graduated in painting from Tehran University of Art, where he ob-tained his BA degree as well as his MA degree in illustration and doctoral degree in arts. Some of his activities include: illustration for young adults press for twenty years; design and illustration for more than 50 children's books; teaching MA students for ten years; teaching BA illustration and painting students for ten years.

Nikanpour was selected as the prominent illustrator in the Iranian Artists Forum in 2001 and received an honorary doc-torate degree and the first-class Order of Culture and Art from The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance in 2003. He was a jury member of a few university and children’s books illustration exhibitions throughout Tehran. He also participated and gave interviews at illustration seminars in Bologna, Italy. He is currently an art consultant and direc-tor, juror of a few international and local exhibitions, winner of some local and global awards, and author of many illustration books.

The common illustration feature of his works is using well-shaded Ecoline colours in books for pre-school children.

In the book, The Size of the World, Nikanpour distances himself from his previous colour-based style and takes on a uniqueapproach to the utilisation of acrylic paints and colourful lines similar to handprints to create simple illustrations using environmental lines. Those illustrations lead him to the abstraction of his later illustrations. The illustrations of this book caused him to receive the honorary diploma of Lannion at the global biennale in France.

Thirty Springs Left to the Sea is another book Akbar Nikanpour illustrated in the 1980s. The pictures of this book were illustrated using Ecoline style like the illustrations of the book Wooden White Horse. Some other works by Nikanpour in the 1980s include the illustrations of the books First Day of School (1989), How Easy to Catch a Dragonfly, The Sun,My Home, Behind the Red Light, The Sky is Not Cloudy, Spring Story, and The Story of the Moon, Snake, and Poone (1989).
