“Foreigners demand for metaphor in the Iranian art - Practical Rules in exhibitions”

Mona Khosheghbal believes that owning a gallery comes with a two-sided responsibility, on one side to be engaged with the artist’s emotions and on the other side to be involved in financial and managerial tasks.

Mona Khosheghbal, the manager of CAMA Gallery, explains the difficulties and responsibilities of having a gallery, to the Mehr News Agency: “In my opinion, being a gallerist is as difficult as being a firefighter because it contains two-sided responsibility; one responsibility is dealing with the artist’s emotions and the other one is to deal with economic and managerial responsibilities. Thus, one of the difficulties in being a gallerist is keeping it balanced and knowing where and how to connect with artists and manage the economic issues.”

“Since I was an artist and I used to teach at the university, I have a good relationship with the artists, and due to my interest in the management, I think I can make it too.” She added.

Khosheghbal, by referring to influences of the current economic situation on the art market and the society, added: “nowadays, the situation is not desirable enough, in which, even the old galleries are being closed. However, I am not going to be tied up to the situation and I believe the common exhibitions are not suitable for the audiences anymore and for this reason, we decided to make the exhibitions more attractive by adding side activities, such as performance, to the exhibitions.”

“Considering the highly secured building of the CAMA Gallery and its connection to the police station, which has made it similar to a bank, the gallery is suitable for hosting the members of foreign embassies and artistic collaborations with other countries.”, She added.

According to the licencing and regulations of the Ministry of Culture and Guidance for holding exhibitions, she added: “Although I am an artist, I always obey the law, which I have stated to the foreign media too. Respecting the basic principles of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which, I am currently working in, has a great importance to me; I think the primary principles in any organization is respecting the law.”

Considering that Iranian artists, in contrast with European artists, use metaphor in their works of art, she said: “the usage of metaphor in the art by Iranian artists is very attractive, and foreigners also enjoy this style of work. They are seeking the hidden Iranian philosophy and are not looking for the outwards. Although the protest art is good, the visual arts are the worst media for demonstrating it.”
