Artwork explanation

My recent artistic work has been involved with the world of charms, phylactery, talismans and spells. I have started this project in 2011.

What has been important for me, has been to cast a new look at the world of symbols that we have been living with for centuries and have influenced our beliefs and attitudes, our understanding of the world; our reactions to events - to our grief, our joy and our hopes.

About 1,000 years ago, the Persian scholar Al-Biruni who had no taste for the world of magic, sorcery and superstition and wanted men to look at the world with open eyes, decided to conduct a public experiment. He held an emerald necklace to the eyes of a snake in a large public square and to the people’s amazement, the snake was not blinded nor did it wither away.

Stones, gems, metals, symbols, colours and words still have the same mystic qualities for many, that they had a thousand years ago; they unravel knots from tangled affairs and bind their spells on lovers’ hearts.

People still lock their wishes and their secrets in amulets to wear around their necks. Such colourful talismans and phylacteries have been with us for as long as we have had our wishes, our secrets, our dreams.

Can we look into the world of such wonders and hear its secrets? Can we cast aside our paint and brushes, and peel away the layers enveloping this mystic art to comprehend and picture the world of spells and talismans?

I have not used brushes in these artistic works which are acrylic paint on canvass; I have tried to reveal hidden layers by scraping and paring.

Expert Opinion

Kianoush Farid's work is a journey to explore the dreams and mysteries. For this reason, instead of painting with colour and brush, scratches the colours on the surface of the canvas to shape these forms and symbols and portrays stories of the worlds full of spells and Amulets.
