Nasser Taghvai

In the summer of 1941, in the heat of World War II, he was born in an Arab village on Abadan Island in the heart of a forest of tall and green palm trees. During his childhood, along with his parents, he traveled to the southernmost seaport cities in the South of Iran and attended each level of elementary school in a different city and village, and seven years later, when he returned to his home town, he was a Sindbad teenager in his dream world. He was interested in literature at high school, but he studied mathematics. In his teens he used to write short stories and was fascinated by new styles, however, he still does not know how he entered the cinema. In this route, he encountered wise people and interesting scenes, although his own life does not have any interesting scenes. In his mind, his only chance in life might have been that he had lived an unwanted birth for almost seventy years as a superfluous man nearby an elderly nation.

Thirteen short stories, fourteen documentary, four short films, six feature films, and a sixteen-hour television series, named My Uncle Napoleon (Daei Jan Napoleon), appear in his work in addition to a collection of photographs and slides from the nature of life and culture of his country in numerous views. However, he may seem sluggish, because in these years, for reasons that he prefers to not tell, his new works have not been seen nor read.

In half a century ago, by the time he chose to make film as a profession, gradually learnt that the life in the real world is different with living in a cinematic world; in the journey of life one observes for him/herself but in a cinematic journey he or she should observe on behalf of the others. On every trip, one sees things that are not useful for literature, nor cinema. A photographic camera is the best companion. Showing the face of Iran in different views, in a multi-volume album, has been a long-awaited dream for me and what I have been portrayed so far, is the first steps in achieving that dream. Good or bad, what comes to this collection is original and I have been just acting as a middleman for capturing them, like a beginner photographer with a neutral camera.

Iranian Photography Comes to London for the First Time

‘Photography is the mother of cinema.’ said the late Iranian film director Abbas Kiarostami once. He should know a thing or two, about a thing or two, for Abbas Kiarostami’s sophisticated artistic legacy was the first the allowed us to truly catch a glimpse into the reality of those living in a country under strict political restrictions.
