Dr. Daryoush Houshmand was born in 1935 in Babol, Mazandaran province, Iran. After passing the elementary school and high school in that city, he completed a medical course in city of Tabriz. He, then worked as a doctor at the Mazandaran Fisheries Company in the city of Babolsar, for four years. In 1966, at age thirty-one, he moved to the United State and still lives in Livingston, New Jersey. His passion for painting began from the beginning of his childhood, even at the age of four to five, he started painting with coloured pencil in kindergarten, and gradually began working with oil paint during his youth. He never attended painting classes, but he followed his studies about painting in Europe and Iran. After working in medicine, he a took part in the second biennale of painters in Tehran and his work of Painter’s Room was published in the catalogue. He followed the art of painting after his carrier in paediatric, in the United State, and gradually expanded his activities in this field.
“I would never become overwhelmed by painting, art is an endless ocean and an infinite atmosphere. There is no end to it, there is such an unknown mystery that it will never lose its freshness. I love nature, flowers and garden. I believe a garden, is an imposing canvas. I create my paintings during the spring, summer and early autumn, and renew the memories of this love during the winter in my studio”, he said.
Even though Dr. Houshmand learned to paint without taking classes, he always considers himself a student. In recent years, in New Jersey, he has participated in several painting classes, where he became acquainted with watercolour, Pastel, paintings on Silk, Acrylic and Collage, which have been used in his recent work. He declares; “I am still not even a drop of the painting’s ocean. My eyes are still looking for divine beauty and phenomena everywhere, to discover something new and enjoy it. God has created so many beautiful things that their perfection brings the mankind to the paradise, which is the best spiritual and physical nutrition”, he added.
“My paintings do not express a particular idea or advice. My goal is to bring what magically and mysteriously catches my eyes, on the canvas. My attempt is to share this divine gift, just as the nature enchants me, and take a positive vibe from that pleasure.”, he explained.
Despite the fact that he has participated in numerous exhibitions in the United States and Europe, he has never collected his works of art, during the years of his activity. Eventually, by the encouragement and insistence of his friend, Master Mahmoud Farshchian, a contemporary Iranian high-class painter, has sought to gather a number of his works in this collection, in order to familiarise people of his country and other countries with his art. Hopefully this book is welcomed by everyone. He says art of painting has no limits and anyone can paint whatever they want.
“Sometimes I create two-dimensional and sometimes three-dimensional paintings. Some of my work has a visual turning point. Whatever seems beautiful to me, will be reflected on the canvas, because creativity has no limits. An artist can be a young child or an elderly person, and with this divine blessing he can relax his soul.”, he said. The art of painting, he believes, is a divine phenomenon that God has given him and some of his family members also have it. Even those who have not been given this gift can create artwork by studying and learning it to heighten their soul.
Dariush Houshmand has been involved in painting with oil and acrylic for thirty years. His need for experimenting the values of the modern art led him to experience painting on Silk while at the same time he was able to create the collage works using cut pieces of paper and nesting them. His attention to colour, form and texture is visible in all his works. His silk paintings are like colourful floating jewellery that somehow evokes the Middle Eastern mosaic artworks. Regardless of the main subject, all Silk works, while separated by the line from individual coloured shapes, are interlinked in one way or another. This line on all his Silk works creates a united element in the overall composition. In his collage works, the specific use of strong clear colours that are intended to describe his main theme, reminds of the mosaics of the historical era of his own land, and it is also similar to Western metal architectural lighting windows. These Collages are mostly abstract, because they have been used to create a combination of large and small shapes. By using these two distinct materials, Dariush Houshmand has been able to successfully and accurately express the breadth of his mind in colour.
